Why Ergonomics Matter in the Lab

What do you think about laboratory safety? Is it the instrument? Avoiding chemical spills? Both are true, but one of the important safety aspects is ergonomics.

So, what exactly is ergonomics in the lab context?

The science of creating workspaces that fit users and prevent injury is known as ergonomics. This involves making sure that the equipment, benches, and seats in a lab are arranged to facilitate genuine human activity.

If your lab is not built with ergonomics, there are common problems that you face which is:

  • Poor posture is caused by workbenches that are either too high or too low.
  • Awkwardly positioned microscopes make users stoop for extended periods of time.
  • Chairs that don’t provide enough back support.
  • Limited space for your legs causes limited movement.

These problems can lead to neck strain, chronic back pain, and diminished focus, all of which compromise productivity and safety.

According to a 2024 study by Dagim Fikre Behailu Hawulte Ayele, Akewok Sime, et al., musculoskeletal diseases were more common among medical laboratory professionals than in Ethiopia, compared to earlier studies, owing of their unergonomic work positions.

A thorough remodeling isn’t always necessary to improve lab ergonomics; small modifications could have a large impact:

  1. Adjustable Furniture: To make your lab staff work safely, invest in bench and seats that can be adjusted in height
  2. Proper Layout Design: Workstations should be arranged to provide quick access to frequently used tools. This lessens needless strain and bending.
  3. Encourage Microbreaks: Encourage your lab staff to take a break for stretching or adjust their posture to ease their muscles. Remind this every 30 to 60 minutes
  4. Ergonomic Accessories: For make your lab staff work with an ergonomic position. use footrest, anti-fatigue mats, and ergonomic pipettes or microscope stand.
  5. Training and Awareness: Sometimes how we use the setup, rather than the configuration, is the problem. Lab users who receive regular ergonomic training are better able to operate safely and effectively.

By putting ergonomics first, labs can lower the chance of accidents, increase concentration, and make everyone’s surroundings more comfortable.
